Message from Alan

Tonight colleagues from North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) will feature on BBC Look North to remind people that during the COVID-19 pandemic other illnesses don’t go away - so it’s important that people seek help and treatment if they need it.

We are launching this short animation to help share this message with the public and over the next few weeks this will be supported with lots of extra information and advice.

We want to reassure people that they shouldn’t be deterred because they are worried they are putting additional pressures on the NHS or that they will catch the virus.

Regionally we have seen a reduction the number of people presenting with stroke and mini strokes (TIAs). For strokes and heart attacks, early diagnosis and treatment of warning symptoms can reduce the risk of recurrence, heart failure and even death - so these messages are really important.

We have also seen a reduction in referrals for suspected cancer and GP colleagues are telling us that fewer people are coming for advice - as we all know early diagnosis and treatment is essential. Your support to continue to share these messages, as you have been doing, is much appreciated.

Finally tonight is #clapforcarers – our opportunity to thank all our colleagues and local communities for all they are doing. Every day I am touched and humbled by the efforts of all our teams – so a big thank you and a big clap from me.

Best wishes, Alan
Alan Foster, executive lead for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System
