Lay member and non-executives network
A non-executive and lay member network – with representation from NHS provider organisations and clinical commissioning group areas across the north east and north Cumbria – is being established. This group will help us to ensure the views of patients and their representatives are taken into account in developing services and improvements. Network members will be asked to act as a ‘critical friend’, to ensure we adopt a strategic and best practice approach to engagement.
On 6th March 2019, an event for NHS chairs took place to support wider understanding of what an integrated care system means for our region. The meeting discussed views on the ICS’s priorities and governance, including how we should incorporate on-going involvement and briefing arrangements for non-executives, lay members (of foundation trusts) and chairs. Led by Sir John Burn, chair of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the event included a keynote speech from Alan Milburn on the changing demands on healthcare and the need for NHS organisations to work together as systems. A closing speech from Brendan Foster highlighted the potential we have to capitalise on the ‘great north’ brand and do more to promote active lifestyles as part of the Great North Run’s 40th anniversary this year.
