Across health and social care we have a workforce to be proud of – our teams work tirelessly around the clock to provide the very best care and support.
But there is always more we can do to make our region a great place to work and to enable our teams to deliver the very best care, every time.
Alongside this, the way we provide care is changing; with a strong focus on improving health and well being, requiring new and different ways of working. We need to work across organisations to maximise how we use technology, embrace innovation, value leadership and provide excellent employment experiences.
As part of the emerging integrated care system, a workforce board has been established to oversee the development and implementation of a workforce strategy for the north east and north Cumbria. This will focus on key areas where organisations will work together to ensure a strong and sustainable workforce. It will tackle – at scale – the challenges we face from recruitment and retention to education and training. A lot of work is already happening but, under the umbrella of an ICS, we have the ideal opportunity to harness effort in one place, to share and build on innovation and good practice.
A number of working groups will drive forward this programme and support the workforce board, including a programme leadership group focusing on four key areas:
- Continue to be recognised locally, regionally and nationally as a leading and respected region with regards to workforce practice and solutions
- Getting supply and education right (workforce development and innovation) and responding to regional demand.
- Becoming a great place to work; including looking at the flexibility, efficiency, standards and consistency of our HR practices and focusing on retention of staff (overseen by a delivery board).
- Supporting and valuing leadership at all levels (system development); considering cultural change, leadership and resilience.
